So You Think You Know Your Nouns

So you think you know your nouns…aah, but do you?

Nouns. Sounds innocent, doesn’t it? That is until you try teaching your unruly kids and suddenly you realize that it is something of a Matryoshka doll or a Pandora’s Grammar Box, whichever one sends shivers up your spine.

We don’t stop at proper nouns; we are swiftly and with no warning sucked into abstract nouns, countable nouns, collective nouns, concrete nouns and so on.

But don’t fret, help is at hand. If your kids have just started learning grammar, you can use these fun apps to get them going and you also get some brownie points for being such an awesome mom/dad.

Penguins of Madagascar

Tame the grammar beast with this Penguins of Madagascar game which teaches kids different grammar rules including nouns while the kids run around (virtually) trying to save baby animals. The game includes several missions and the grammar rules are grade-specific.

Grammar Dragon

After selecting the grade, kids can practice identifying different parts of speech in the Grammar Dragon. If they get it right – the app will give feedback immediately – a player can save their friends in the castle from the Grammar Dragon who has captured them.

Grammaropolis

Grammaropolis is an app that uses videos, books and quizzes to teach parts of speech, each of which is represented by an animated character. You can access the nouns section for no cost while the others have to be purchased. Young learners will enjoy the songs and graphics.

Apart from apps, you can also get kids to learn and practice their nouns with the help of activities and worksheets to reinforce what they have already learnt.
